LBOTE Students

Mainstream teaching which makes the curriculum accessible to all LBOTE students is a priority at Canterbury Girls.

Supporting LBOTE Students

  • Students with LBOTE backgrounds in Years 7 & 8 are supported through team teaching in core curriculum by one of the ESL teachers.
  • In Year 8 the Literacy elective is supported by one of the ESL teachers.
  • In Years 9 and 10 English classes taught by the ESL teachers are provided for LBOTE students.
  • In Years 11 and 12 both ESL English courses and the Fundamentals of English are taught.
  • International students are supported by a teacher coordinator and are in the same Roll Call / DEAR group taken by an ESL teacher.
  • Extra ESL time is provided to students in Years 11 and 12 by making ESL teachers available in the Learning Centre and as team teachers in classes with significant numbers of LBOTE students.
  • A support group is offered to LBOTE refugee students which provides assessment for and referral to counselling.

Our aim is to provide as much support as possible to all newly arrived students.
