Subjects Offered at Canterbury Girls High School

Canterbury Girls High School provides a broad range of curriculum that caters for a range of student needs and abilities. A range of extra curricular activities are also available.

The curriculum is divided into three stages.

  • Years 7 and 8 (Stage 4) provide a basic introduction to all courses.

  • In Years 9 and 10 (Stage 5) apart from studies in a core curriculum, students may undertake specialist study in two subjects of their choice (electives).

  • In Years 11 and 12 (Stage 6) students can further specialise in areas of their choice leading to the award of the High School Certificate.

Years 7 - 8 (Stage 4)

In Stage 4 students study a range of subjects to satisfy the mandatory Board of Studies requirements including:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • History and Geography
  • Personal Development/Health /Physical Education
  • Lanuages Other Than English
  • Music
  • Technology
  • Visual Arts

Year 7 students also study Drama while Year 8 students undertake one elective. The electives available are Chinese, Dance, Drama, Literacy, Music and Visual Arts.

Years 9 - 10 (Stage 5)

Studies during Years 9 and 10 build on the skills and interests developed in previous years. In Stage 5, Year 9 and Year 10, students add two electives to their study of core subjects. These elective courses are studied for the two years of Stage 5.

Stage 5 Elective Subjects:

Years 11 - 12 (Stage 6)

In Stage 6 the only compulsory subject is English. Students choose their pattern of study from the wide range of courses offered at Canterbury Girls High School.

The subjects that are offered to students in Year 11 and 12 include:

  • English–Extension 1 & 2, Advanced, Standard, English Studies, ESL, Fundamentals
  • Mathematics-Extension 1 & 2, Advanced, Standard
  • Biology, Chemistry, Physics
  • Ancient and Modern History, Business Studies, Economics, Legal Studies, Society and Culture, Studies of Religion
  • Dance, Drama, Music, Visual Arts
  • Community & Family Studies, Personal Development/Health/Physical Education
  • Chinese, French
  • Food Technology, Textiles and Design
  • VET subjects – Business Services and Hospitality.

Curriculum patterns in the school are based on choice and so vary from year to year. Please contact us to find out if we are offering your course pattern for enrolment at our school. Students can also apply for TAFE courses, Saturday School Language and OTEN Languages.
