Enid Singleton

To the Headmistress

Thought I would drop you a small note, of the time I was at Canterbury Home Science School, from 1953-1955.

Our 1st year went from 1A to 1H.  There were so many girls that started that year. We had 3 sets of twins in our year, one of the sets were from the “Home girls” they were called in those days.

We had a white blouse, but they had to wear a blue blouse.  There were quite a few of them from the “home”

We all had to travel, long distances to get to the school.  As there weren’t so many high schools around for all of us.

I remember when we did the cooking, in really old gas stoves and ovens.  And one day Beryl Warren and I were cooking something in the old oven and it (the gas) blew out, with such an explosion, signed Beryl’s hair and eye-brows and down the side of my head. I don’t know about Beryl, but I wouldn’t touch another gas stove after that, and even today I will only use electric stoves. It gave us such a fright.

But I loved being there at school, my friend Glenda Strour, was a very good swimmer, and with all her training, her fair hair went green from Bankstown Pool.

I have very happy memories of my old school days, and still see some of my old friends from there, as well as that were in my class.

The only teachers I can remember were:

Miss Gray (Headmistress)
Miss Edith Stark (Headmistress)
Miss Stretton
Miss Seville
Miss Turner (Sport)
Mrs Breakwell
Mrs Maddocks
Miss Flemming
Mr Arvic (Art)
Mrs Williams (Library)
Miss Smith-White
Mrs Rowney (Cooking)

I hope all the girls there at school now enjoy it as much as I did.

We had to carry the vigoro and soft ball (huge bag) down to the oval, across the bridge, where the ice-skating is now.

We used to get the bus to take us to Bankstown Swimming Pool.

Wishing you all the very best.
Enid Singleton (now Canning)

P.S.  I still can remember the school song, after all these years.
