Edna Mary George Denneen

Edna George was born in her family home at 34 First Avenue Campsie on 26th November 1916.  Along with her two sisters Elsie and Minnie George, she attended Campsie Public School and later Canterbury Domestic Science School, as it was then known, from 1929 to 1931.

She was a very keen student and the many skills she acquired in her years at Canterbury, along with her natural abilities guided her to a life time of achievement in the workforce and beyond.  Upon leaving school at the age of 15 years she worked as a secretary in the City until she married at the age of 20, raised 4 children and returned to the workforce as the bookkeeper at Sydenham Bankstown Building Society at Campsie.  She loved her job but a severe hearing loss forced her to retire when she was 63.

On retirement Edna enjoyed two wonderful overseas trips, but her greatest loves were family, her home of 70 years at Belmore, and her wonderful craft of many varieties.  At one stage she and her sister handmade kid gloves for Hordern Bros and her knitting followed her everywhere.  Edna passed away in Canterbury Hospital on 21st September 2007, having lived a full and happy life.  She left behind 4 children, 4 grand children and 5 great grand children.

Included are Edna’s 1931 Shorthand Course Completion Certificate and her 1932 Superior Public School Certificate.
